Here are some key FAQs for when attending your ophthalmology appointment at CHEC. If you have any questions ahead of your appointment please see our FAQ section or call us on 0344 264 4160. Can I drive to my appointment? We would not recommend driving to your appointments in case dilating drops are used which will blur your vision. This decision is not always made in advance so it is advised you arrange not to drive after your appointment. How long will I be? This varies depending on clinic type, as with any healthcare setting, unforeseen delays may arise during the day which the team will keep you updated on. Who will I see? We have a multi disciplinary team which includes optical assistants, optometrists, nurses and ophthalmologists. During your appointment there may be another Doctor shadowing or a student placement. As a organisation that supports the development of our staff and future medics, you may be assessed by someone under supervision, please ask staff for more information if required. Can I wear contact lenses? We don’t recommend wearing contact lenses to your appointments, if you are attending for a cataract consultation, soft contact lenses need to be out for 1 week prior to the appointment and RGP/hard lenses need to be left out for one month before the appointment as these can change the shape of your cornea and affect your measurements taken during the assessments. It’s also a good idea to remove any eye make-up/lashes for procedures to help reduce the risk of infection. What should I bring with me? It is useful if you please bring with you, any current glasses you have, a list of your medication, your anticoagulant therapy book if you have one, and the contact telephone number of your next of kin/the person taking you home. If someone holds lasting power of attorney for you, please bring proof of this. These may not always be required but can be useful to have to hand if needed. What if I have a special requirement?
