Understanding Dermatitis

Understanding the specific type of dermatitis is crucial for effective management. Diagnosis often involves a physical examination and discussion of symptoms and potential triggers. Patch testing may be used to identify allergens in contact dermatitis.

Prevalence and Treatment

Treatment strategies vary depending on the type and severity of dermatitis. For atopic and seborrheic dermatitis, regular moisturisation with emollients is essential to restore the skin’s barrier. Topical corticosteroids and calcineurin inhibitors can reduce inflammation and itching during flare-ups. Contact dermatitis management involves identifying and avoiding the triggering substance, alongside topical treatments. In more severe cases, oral medications or light therapy might be necessary.

Prevention plays a significant role in managing dermatitis. Identifying and avoiding triggers, such as harsh soaps, detergents, and allergens, is essential. Maintaining good skin hygiene, including gentle cleansing and regular moisturisation, helps strengthen the skin’s barrier.
