A New Horizon in Healthcare: Aiden Lee’s Journey from NHS to CHEC Leader Post Date : October 31, 2025 Career 4 minutes read We recently sat down with Aiden Lee, a Lead Endoscopy Practitioner at CHEC, to discuss his inspiring 15-year career in nursing and the transformative move that allowed him to lead and innovate. Aiden’s story is a powerful testament to finding a setting where deep experience and a strong vision can truly shape patient care and service delivery. Finding a Calling and Seeking a New Challenge Aiden’s entry into healthcare was inspired by his mother, a high-level manager who set up successful blood transfusion clinics across the UK. Seeing the world of hospitals from a young age sparked his passion. Despite his mother advising against nursing – citing frustrations with things like the working environment in large organisations – Aiden was motivated by the challenge. He spent around 15 years in endoscopy nursing, meticulously climbing the ranks and building a wealth of specialist knowledge. However, after years of dedication, Aiden reached a “ceiling point” in his previous large NHS setting, finding opportunities to progress his career or implement substantial changes increasingly limited. He knew he wanted a different kind of challenge, one that valued his years of experience but offered a more agile environment. Seeking a change, Aiden was drawn to CHEC after reading about its reputation as a “Great Place to Work.” He was curious to see how a private healthcare provider, closely linked to the NHS, operated differently and whether it could provide the forward-thinking role he desired. A Voice for Positive Change and Innovation The move to CHEC proved to be the catalyst for the professional leadership Aiden was seeking. The biggest change he experienced was the freedom to have a voice and the immediate impact he could make. “I’ve managed to have a voice in CHEC and I’ve been able to make positive changes to some of the practises in endoscopy pre-assessment… I voiced my opinions and they were welcomed and opened up to further discussion and review leading to my suggestions to be implemented.” A core aspect of CHEC’s culture that Aiden highlights is the lack of barriers and the willingness of leadership to listen. Instead of encountering ‘gatekeeping,’ he was actively asked to help draft a new Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) to improve patient care. For Aiden, being involved in such a fundamental aspect of patient care and policy creation was incredibly refreshing and demonstrated CHEC’s dedication to best practice. Aiden’s experience was immediately put to use in developing the service, including helping to mobilise new units and secure the prestigious JAG accreditation for CHEC Nottingham. This was a direct result of CHEC valuing his expertise and providing the platform to apply it. Building a Dream Team and Community Focus The supportive environment at CHEC allowed Aiden to realise a professional goal: building his own “dream team.” He’s successfully hired three skilled former colleagues to work alongside him, creating a trusted and effective unit he affectionately refers to as a “second family.” Furthermore, the move from a major hospital to CHEC’s community-based sites offered a new perspective on patient care. Aiden and his colleagues are able to focus on the specific needs of their local demographic – for instance, accommodating the shift-work schedules of many within the community by adjusting clinic times. This ability to be responsive and offer greater patient choice is a cornerstone of CHEC’s service model. Now serving as a Deputy Manager, Aiden is focused on future expansion. He is looking to cross-skill the endoscopy and ophthalmic teams to create a more unified workforce and is eager to explore new services like ENT and Dermatology, which represent exciting opportunities for career development. Join the CHEC Family: A Place to Lead and Grow Aiden Lee’s story is an invitation to nurses and practitioners who are ready to step up and shape the future of healthcare. For those with specialist skills, particularly in endoscopy, CHEC offers a unique proposition: An active voice: The chance to actively craft and mould an endoscopy unit’s practices and policy from the ground up. Future-proof stability: Opportunities to learn new specialisms (like Ophthalmology) and expand into new service areas (ENT, Dermatology), ensuring stability and long-term career growth. Experience valued: A setting where deep clinical experience is not just appreciated but immediately trusted and utilised to drive quality and accreditation. As Aiden puts it, CHEC provides a fantastic opportunity for career change and expansion, working for a company that is “very open to suggestion.” If you’re looking for a place where your skills lead to tangible change and you can help build a patient-focused service, CHEC could be your next horizon.
